Copper Wire Theft Is Rising in Calgary — Thousands Left Without Service

Calgary is facing a surge in copper wire theft, and it’s causing serious problems for both residents and service providers. Since July 10, there have been seven major incidents that have left over 3,500 Telus customers without internet, TV, or even access to 911 in neighbourhoods like Ogden and Signal Hill.

The growing wave of thefts is hitting Telus hard. The company has responded by deploying additional repair crews, and in some areas, they’re welding manhole covers shut to prevent more criminal activity. But even with these efforts, the damage is being felt across the city.

Telus is now calling for tougher penalties against offenders and urging Calgarians to stay alert and report suspicious activity. These thefts don’t just affect a few cables—they put entire communities at risk, especially when emergency services become unreachable.
